The Business Development Director will be responsible for and involved in strategic marketing and operations planning with top executives, setting objectives and identifying methods to reach those goals. They must be keenly aware of organizational growth initiatives related to a variety of markets and target customer segments, as well as the company’s potential and capabilities to meet customer needs with a mix of existing and new products/services.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Sales Forecasting: Work closely with field sales team to create a highly calibrated annual sales forecast process to be used as a basis for all aspects of the business for each of Vibrant’s three brands, with the ability to be updated quarterly on a rolling basis.

 

  • Sales Reporting: Develop a comprehensive set of sortable monthly/quarterly/annual sales reports that show regionality, performance vs. forecast, and comparison to competitors. Regularly review with Sales Directors, VP and Executive team with recommendations to ensure performance is on track.
  • Sales Support: Provide presentations and proposals that deliver consistent brand messaging while arming the sales function with relevant information, data and industry expertise.
  • Sales Budget Management: Work with the VP of Sales and Marketing to develop and manage an annual sales department budget.
  • Trade Spend Oversight: Work with field sales team to set annual trade spend targets and ensure that targets are met. Coordinate the creation and distribution of promotional calendars.
  • Distributor Oversight: Work with and direct business development manager to efficiently and profitably manage distributor relationships
  • Pricing Oversight: Ensure pricing by market and segment are properly structured with field sales team to meet profitability goals, while positioning products to be priced competitively vs. competition. Develop pricing strategies for new product lines that provide R&D with guidelines for development. Work with Finance to generate customer-specific pricing for private label clients.
  • Strategic Market Analysis: Regularly review trade journals, newsletters and other on-line material to track directional nature of the natural and organic food space. Attend trade shows where appropriate to meet with field sales and interact with customers. Review current and potential data resources, recommend data buys, and develop strategic reports specific to company product categories.
  • New Product Development: Take the strategic lead in analyzing new product categories. Conduct market price analysis, competitive product positioning, and necessary margin requirements. Establish a new product category/SKU launch budget model to be used in prioritizing new category entry. Work closely with Marketing, R&D and production to create and manage product launch to budget targets in targeted time frame. Educate field sales on new products, and work with marketing to provide them with tools needed to promote and sell.
  • Product Development Process Catalyst: Work closely with VP of Sales and Marketing and Marketing Director to provide strategic direction to the organization based on new product business plan to execute product launch in conjunction with R&D and Production.
  • Build And Supervise In-House Business Development Team: Work with VP of Marketing and Sales to develop a team of two in-house business development coordinators who execute daily outbound calls to take orders for new and existing products. Coordinate pitch schedule with new item launches, promo calendar, regional Ignite and broker sales calls, and any regional marketing demo focus.
  • Provide Direction on Order Fulfillment: Work with Finance team to prioritize orders when necessary, and ensure shipment of POs in a timely manner through liaison with Production. Communicate with field sales to ensure customer expectations are met.

This professional must have the skills to grow and be a “doer,” willing to roll up their sleeves with limited resources. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of growth and a thorough understanding of the grocery, club, mass and natural and food service classes of trade. They will be both top and bottom-line focused, making data-driven decisions but able to use strong sales/consumer intuition when needed.   • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of and be proficient in the use of the Macintosh operating system and related programs, and Microsoft Office Software, specifically Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
